About the Methodology

The Best Doctors surveys more than 50,000 doctors to generate a peer-review evaluation of the medical profession by asking one simple question: "If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, whom would you choose?" Physicians who were identified by their peers in previous years as the best in their specialty receive the survey. For more information about the methodology, visit www.best doctors.com or contact Best Doctors at (800) 675-1199, Ext. 315. Best Doctors uses proprietary software that analyzes the surveys and provides an aggregate score for each physician. This yields a preliminary set of doctors who meet the initial criteria for inclusion. These physicians are then checked for licensure, certification and disciplinary actions. Best Doctors has developed a system for screening that it believes is rigorous and accurate. The surveys are confidential, and Best Doctors does not receive compensation from doctors or hospitals in exchange for listing doctors. The only way a doctor can be listed is by receiving enough votes through the Best Doctors peer-review polling process. About 4 percent of doctors in the United States are named Best Doctors in any given year.
