Description:John George Psychiatric Pavilion opened in 1992 and was named in honor of Alameda County Supervisor and mental health advocate John George. The 80-bed public psychiatric hospital is part of the Alameda County Medical Center and serves adults with severe and disabling mental illnesses. The hospital is open to all patients but serves a large indigent population. The hospital’s multidisciplinary staff diagnoses and evaluates patients while also providing services designed to help patients control their illness, achieve personal goals and build a foundation to live as independently as possible. The hospital does not treat children or adolescents, but hospital staff refers those patients to hospitals that specialize in psychiatric emergency or crisis services for youth.
